Basic Oxygen Process (BOP)

Both the Basic Oxygen Process (BOP) and the quality of produced stainless steel can be improved through the application of process mass spectrometry. This mechanism is used by many process engineers to determine and manage the volumes of carbon within the liquid metal produced.

This process removes the surplus carbon through burning with oxygen, forming both carbon dioxide and monoxide, which is measured to reveal the amount of carbon removed. This flow of gas is very fast and so requires efficient and accurate measurements. This can be obtained using Extrel’s MAX300-RTG™ Industrial Process Mass Spectrometer, which rapidly and precisely gives results on the full gas stream in 1.5 seconds.
